I am making, thinking, working and living on stolen Cammeraygal and Gadigal lands of the Eora nation as an uninvited guest. I would like to acknowledge and pay my respects to the elders past, present and emerging. Sovereignty was never ceded.

Milk Tea?

2019

Air-dry clay, Chinese ink on paper, Milk Tea, Ice
Live performance 5 minutes

Performed at PACT Salon: Slurp!, 16/3/2019. Curated by Carla Zimber and Mikaela Stafford.

This installation comments on the nature of culture as a constantly evolving spectrum rather than distinct categories. Milk Tea is a symbol of a third culture that began when the British added milk and sugar to tea from China. Yet, there is no formula that dictates the perfect blend of Eastern and Western ingredients. I see each cup as individual’s bodies and their contents, a proportion of their tea to milk, as their true cultural composition. I also see myself as different cups of tea on different days, leaning neither one way or another and eventually swaying along the spectrum. The ice cubes will change the colour of the tea over time and this spectrum itself will gradually become out of order, changing the nature of this in between culture. In the background, the Chinese-like calligraphy is comprised of fake English and Chinese words that amalgamated from repetitive, minute changes until one language becomes another. During my performance, my right hand taught my left hand to hold chopsticks and carry iced cubes of milk tea across the platform.
